Music

At St Joseph’s, music is an ever-evolving part of our school identity. The children recognize that music is something that can be enjoyed and celebrated. Our children engage with a variety of musical genres including hymns, songs, rhymes and musical poetry, all of which are enjoyed across the curriculum, and are exposed to the history of music and a wide variety of cultural music. We encourage the children to participate in local music events, linking our school to the Parish and wider community, allowing our children to SHINE and share their special and unique gifts with others. At St Joseph’s, our intention is that children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analyzing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. We encourage our St Joseph’s pupils to develop a curiosity for the subject and gain transferable skills such as listening, thinking critically and in patterns, being creative and increasing confidence. Our school choir, made up of children in Years 2 and above, are given the opportunity to take real ownership of their learning, selecting some of the songs we sing and performing these to the rest of the school.
